Ashland man killed in Christmas Eve shooting, suspect charged with first degree murder


ASHLAND, Va. (WRIC) — A man is dead after a shooting on Christmas Eve near Route 1 in Ashland and a suspect has been charged with first degree murder in connection to his death.

Hanover County Sheriff’s Department, deputies and officers from the Ashland Police Department responded to the 100 block of East Omni Court at around 7:37 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 24 for a report of a shooting.

When they got there, police found 59-year-old James Edward Clarke of Ashland with an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another man found at the scene, 59-year-old Eric Joe Key of Richmond, was arrested and charged with first degree murder, as well as use of a firearm while committing a felony.
