Volunteers create annual flag garden honoring 37,000 fallen Massachusetts heroes on Boston Common

A patriotic annual tradition returned Wednesday to the Boston Common. For the 13th year, volunteers placed more than 37,000 flags on the grass ahead of Memorial Day to honor fallen heroes from Massachusetts from the American Revolution to today. On Thursday, the completed flag garden will serve as a backdrop for a Memorial Day ceremony. The final 388 flags in the display will be placed during the ceremony, representing the military servicemembers killed since Sept. 11. The annual Flag Garden returned to its full size in 2021, after being reduced in size in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A patriotic annual tradition returned Wednesday to the Boston Common.

For the 13th year, volunteers placed more than 37,000 flags on the grass ahead of Memorial Day to honor fallen heroes from Massachusetts from the American Revolution to today.

On Thursday, the completed flag garden will serve as a backdrop for a Memorial Day ceremony. The final 388 flags in the display will be placed during the ceremony, representing the military servicemembers killed since Sept. 11.
