‘American Idol’ judges wowed by Salisbury’s Jeremiah Jay Copeland

CORRECTION: Jeremiah Copeland attended graduate school at the University of Houston. An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified his grad school.

There was some hesitation when “American Idol” judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Ritchie and Katy Perry unanimously blessed Jeremiah “Jay “Copeland of Salisbury with the exclusive platinum ticket on episode five, on Monday night.

The platinum ticket is a new perk for season 20 that allows only three contestants to take a shortcut and not only go to Hollywood, but also skip a Hollywood round.

“It’s the 20th year of creating superstars and you’re a superstar. I think you are worth all of the platinum,” Perry told the 23-year-old singer from Salisbury.

Salisbury native Jeremiah 'Jay' Copeland won the new platinum ticket on episode five of 'American Idol' on March 21. The new perk takes him to Hollywood and gives him a shortcut through a Hollywood round.

Copeland wowed the judges with his audition, singing Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours.”

Jay said in an emailed statement to Delmarva Now / The Daily Times that his time in front of the “Idol” judges was a blur.

“To be quite honest, I don’t remember [Perry] calling me a ‘superstar.’ I was embracing the moment of the minute,” he explained.
