Motorists navigating the Route 299 construction zone through Middletown face another year of roadwork, as the widening project hits the midpoint.
The construction began last summer to widen Route 299 to four lanes from Route 1 to Cleaver Farm Road and center the left turn lane to Catherine Street. There will also be a new sidewalk and a multi-use path.
The project consists of nine phases and is currently focusing on phases 1 and 2, with an expected completion date of next fall.
The first phases are expected to conclude at the end of September and include the widening of the north side of the roadway, adding sidewalks and new drainage and curbs. As part of phase 4, a new roundabout has been added to Brick Mill Road and was opened in July.
Phase 3 will begin this fall to widen the south side of the road.

Throughout the project, you can expect delays and lane shifts in the construction zones.
The project is to address congestion during peak traffic hours as a result of Middletown’s rapid growth over the last 20 years and anticipated future growth.

Other improvements to the road include adding public transit facilities for multiple modes of transportation; upgrading traffic signals, road signage and pavement markings; adding lighting at intersections and improving bicycle and pedestrian pathways.
