East side staple in urgent need of extra hands



Tucked aside Farwell Avenue, Zaffiro’s Pizza became an east side staple in the 1950s.“My father and my uncle started it in 1954. We were located in the Third Ward, and in 1956 we moved here,” owner Michael Zaffiro said. “Been around a long time.” But in 2020 the shop, like many others in the restaurant business, fell victim to the pandemic.”The pandemic was very challenging,” Zaffiro said. “When we were able to open our dining room and our bar, getting help was very hard to do.”They hired help this summer, utilizing students’ homes for summer. But as August fades into fall, those students leave again, putting a hole in the staff numbers.They had to keep dine-in options off the table on Tuesdays and Wednesdays because there aren’t enough employees.Now they’re in urgent need of extra hands.“I want to get open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as far as our dining room and our bar, and it’s been tough,” Zaffiro said. “You just get a lot of people who will ghost you.” Zaffiro said they are thankful for the current staff members who step up to help.“It’s tough because a lot of our workers are part-time, to begin with, and they have families and some go to school, and it’s been tough, they’ve been doing a lot of extra hours and helping us out,” he said. “They’ve been very good about that.”He said they need four people to join their wait staff, and two people as hosts in order to reopen the dining area and bar full-time.For information on applications contact Zaffiro’s Pizza on Facebook or email rosannazaffiro14@gmail.com.
