A 25-year-old Flint, Michigan, man has been charged with firing a weapon at a motorist on I-295 near New Castle on Sunday.
No one was injured, Delaware State Police said, but the incident — which occurred about 6:45 p.m. — caused the closure of southbound I-295 at Route 13. The gunfire drew a large police response to the area.
I-295 fatal:1 dead, at least 4 injured following crash on I-295
According to police, the Michigan man was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a minor crash on southbound I-295, south of US 13. Following the crash, the man exited the vehicle and tried to block traffic so the involved vehicles could move to the interstate’s shoulder.
As the Michigan man did that, a 58-year-old Wilmington-area man tried to drive past the crash. This, police said, started an argument between the two men.
The Michigan man, police said. returned to his vehicle and retrieved a gun. He then fired at the Wilmington-area man. The Wilmington man was not hit by the gunfire, but his vehicle was struck four times.
The Wilmington man fled onto north I-495 and called 911.
The Michigan man remained at the scene, where he was taken into custody without incident. He was charged with two counts of reckless endangering, a weapons charge and criminal mischief.
The man was being held at Young Correctional Institute in Wilmington on Monday morning after failing to post $33,000 secured bail.
