So the Eagles waited through a final day of NFL games to find out who, where and when they’ll play.
Finally, after all the permutations played themselves out, the Eagles will play in the wildcard round against the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The game will be in Tampa next Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Eagles (9-8) had to wait until the San Francisco 49ers came back to beat the Los Angeles Rams 27-24 in overtime Sunday evening before knowing their seeding.

That’s because both Tampa Bay (13-4) and New Orleans won, ensuring a matchup with the Buccaneers. The Rams-49ers outcome determined whether the Eagles-Bucs matchup would be as the No. 6 seed vs. No. 3, or No. 7 vs. No. 2.
The 49ers (10-7) will get the No. 6 seed while the Eagles will get the No. 7 seed. Tampa Bay will move up to No. 2.
The Eagles lost to the Buccaneers 28-22 on Oct. 14. But that game wasn’t as close as the score indicated. The Bucs raced out to a 28-7 lead before the Eagles scored two touchdowns late.
Bucs quarterback Tom Brady completed 34 of 42 passes for 297 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception that night.
But Tampa Bay lost two of its best receivers in recent weeks. Chris Godwin, the Middletown, Delaware native, tore his ACL on Dec. 20, and Antonio Brown was kicked off the team after he took off his uniform and left the field last week during the Bucs’ game against the Jets.
Godwin had 98 catches for 1,103 yards receiving in 14 games.
Brady, meanwhile, at 44 years old, threw for 5,316 yards this season, with 43 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. He became the oldest player in NFL history to throw for at least 5,000 yards in a season.
The Eagles, in the playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons, watched it all unfold from their homes because they played Saturday night, losing to the Dallas Cowboys 51-26.
“We’ll be preparing for multiple teams,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said Saturday night about how he and his staff would spend Sunday. “We’ll take educated guesses to have a little bit more for one team than we do another team.
“If it shifts late, then we’ll refocus our attention to that other team. So, it will be a day that we’re just working, business as usual, and we’ll keep an eye on the television and see what’s going on there.”
That’s exactly what happened.
The 49ers fell behind the Rams 17-0, then rallied to tie the game in the third quarter. The Rams went ahead by a touchdown before the 49ers tied it in the final seconds. Then the 49ers got a field goal before holding off the Rams on their possession.
By then, it didn’t matter because the Eagles were locked in with the Bucs.
Eagles 1st-round picks taking shape
Those results culminated a wild day for the Eagles, who watched as their former quarterback, Carson Wentz, bombed in the regular-season finale for the Colts in the early games. A victory would have clinched a playoff spot for Indianapolis.
Instead, the Colts lost 26-11 to the NFL’s worst team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and ended up missing the playoffs.
Still, Wentz played in every game this season for Indianapolis, thus improving the draft pick from the Colts from a second-rounder to a first-rounder.
That gives the Eagles three first-round picks. The Eagles also have Miami’s. Both the Dolphins and Colts missed the playoffs, so those picks will fall somewhere between 15 and 18. The Eagles’ pick will be determined by how far they get in the playoffs, but won’t be lower than 19.
Eagles know 2022 opponents
The Eagles’ opponents for the 2022 season came into focus Sunday.
In addition to home and away games against NFC East foes Dallas, Washington (with a new nickname) and the Giants, the Eagles will face the NFC North and the AFC South, with a trip to Indianapolis to face Carson Wentz and the Colts.
By finishing second in the NFC East, the Eagles will match up against second-place finishers in the NFC West, NFC South and AFC North.
The dates for those games will be determined in April or May.
Home: Dallas, Washington, Giants, Minnesota, Green Bay, Jacksonville, Tennessee, New Orleans, Pittsburgh.
Away: Dallas, Washington, Giants, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Arizona.
