A fox in Frankford is the third animal to test positive for rabies in Delaware this year.
It was found in the area of Burbage Road, near Jones Road and Road 374, and euthanized. The fox had no known contact with humans but there were reports of it attacking stray cats, according to the Delaware Division of Public Health.
“If the attacked cats develop rabies, they will become a public health threat, especially to anyone who feeds them,” the division said in a news release.
The division has tested 53 animals for rabies to date this year, three of which were confirmed rabid — one raccoon and two foxes.
NATIONWIDE:Deaths from rabies increased due to exposure to bats. They could have been prevented, CDC says.
Anyone who thinks they may have been bitten, scratched by or encountered a fox or feral cat in the Burbage Road area should contact their doctor immediately or call the Division of Public Health Rabies Program at 302-744-4995. If it’s your pet that may have been exposed, call your veterinarian.
