RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Dozens of people gathered for a vigil on the bridge in front of the University of Richmond’s Tyler Haynes Commons in memory of student Christopher Elvin, who accidently drowned in the Westhampton Lake on campus Wednesday night.
Richmond Police Department officers were called to the 200 block of Richmond Way around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, for a report of “trouble unknown.”
University of Richmond Police later responded to the call, as the incident was on the university’s campus, according to officials.
Then, the Richmond Fire Department and Henrico County Water Rescue Team were also called to the lake. Richmond Fire crews later found Elvin, who was pronounced dead at the scene
It’s still unclear if Elvin was found in the water, or if he resurfaced before he accidentally drowned. However, Richmond Police said there is no foul play in question at this time.
Elvin was a sophomore from Newark, New Jersey, who was majoring in business administration with a minor in Chinese studies. He was a member of the university’s ultimate frisbee team and once served as president of a Caribbean student organization called West Indian Lynk.
The university’s president sent out a community message today acknowledging his death – extending sympathies to his family, friends and all who knew him. The university’s flag will fly at half staff in memory of Elvin.
