Richmond Women’s Basketball team eliminated from NCAA Tournament after 72-61 loss to Duke

COLUMBUS, Ohio. (WRIC) — The University of Richmond Spiders have been eliminated from the 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament after a 72-61 loss to the Duke Blue Devils Friday.

The Spiders, who shot 48% from the field and 55.6% from three-point range Friday, March 22, were leading by seven going into halftime, but it would not be enough to stay ahead of the Blue Devils, who took the lead back early in the second half and led by as many as 14 points in the final minute of the game.

The Spiders earned a trip to the tournament after winning the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship 65-51 against the Rhode Island Rams at the Henrico Sports & Events Center in the Glen Allen area of Henrico County on Sunday, March 10.

Guard Grace Townsend led the Spiders in scoring with 18, she also recorded eight assists and two steals in 38 minutes on the court. Spiders forward Addie Budnik scored 17 points and recorded three assists and two blocks in 40 minutes on the court. Spiders forward Maggie Doogan scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and recorded two steals.

Blue Devils guard Reigan Richardson led the team in scoring with 25, she also grabbed seven rebounds. Guard Ashlon Jackson scored 14 points and recorded two rebounds, three assists and a steal. Forward Kennedy Brown scored 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds and recorded five assists.

The Blue Devils will face the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Round of 32 on Sunday, March 24.
