RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The 1-seed University of Richmond Spiders and 4-seed Virginia Commonwealth University Rams are both looking to secure a double-bye against underperforming teams tonight as Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball regular season play winds down.
The Spiders, who are at the top of the A-10 standings with a conference record of 12-2, have already essentially secured a spot in the conference’s top 4. The two teams fighting for a double-bye right now, the University of Massachusetts and Saint Bonaventure, do not have enough games left in their regular seasons to knock the Spiders out of their top-4 position.
With a record of 10-4 earning them the 4 spot going into the fourth-to-last game of their regular season, the Rams are in a more precarious spot. If they underperform through the end of the season, they could possibly be surpassed by the Minutemen or Bonnies and go into the conference tournament with only a single-bye.
Luckily, both teams are facing lowly teams tonight. For the Rams, it’s the 5-9 Rhode Island Rams — for the Spiders, it’s the 3-11 Saint Louis Billikens. Following tonight’s games, the Rams and Spiders face off against each other for the final Capital City Classic of the year.
Following the Capital City Classic Saturday, the Spiders have a relatively easy schedule, facing off against Saint Joseph’s and George Mason — both of whom are currently 7-8 in A-10 play. The Rams, on the other hand, end their regular season against the Dayton Flyers, who are currently ranked No. 21 in the AP Poll.
