Suspected burglars in Perry and Bondurant were shot by homeowners in separate incidents Sunday night and Monday afternoon.
Both suspects survived, but investigators continue looking for the man who broke into the home in Bondurant. He was apparently shot in the leg but managed to drive away.
“I grabbed my gun. Walked out in the hallway. And there was a guy holding a bunch of stuff,” the caller told the 911 dispatcher. “[He} charged at me, so I shot him.”
Investigators have released still images of the suspect and the getaway vehicle.
“The suspect who broke into the home was wearing a mask, so it’s a little bit harder to identify him,” said Polk County Sheriff Lt. Ryan Evans. “But hopefully through social media and getting those photos out there, we can figure out it.”
The homeowners are cooperating with investigators and are not facing charges. Richard Rogers, an Iowa Firearms Coalition board member, points to Iowa Code 704, which lays out use of reasonable force.
“We’re talking about a situation where you’re in your home,” Rogers said. “And there’s a presumption built into the law that if somebody has broken into your home or entered unlawfully by stealth, that deadly force is reasonable.”
Neither of the suspected burglars was seriously hurt in the shootings.
