Hopewell firefighters cut hole in roof of burning home while battling severe fire

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — Hopewell Fire and EMS battled a severe house fire in the Mansion Hill Neighborhood Saturday afternoon, where firefighters tried to fight the blaze by cutting a hole in the roof.

According to Hopewell Fire and EMS, emergency units responded to the 400 block of Woodland Road around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, after receiving reports of a house fire. When they arrived, they found smoke pouring from the attic above the home’s garage.

After receiving authorization, the firefighters cut a hole in the home’s roof to help smoke and heat escape the attic.

During this time, firefighters attempted to fight the fire from inside the home but were forced to evacuate due to conditions becoming worse. Efforts continued from outside.

Everyone inside the home was able to escape without injury and no firefighters were hurt while fighting the fire. Additionally, firefighters were able to rescue one cat.

Hopewell Fire and EMS has not released information on the cause of the fire. The current condition of those who were living in the home is also not yet known.
