Petersburg Officers, suspect treated for hazardous materials exposure

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Three Petersburg police officers were taken to the hospital on Sunday after being exposed to hazardous materiels while responding to a distrurbance.

Around 2:49 P.M. on Sunday, January 28th, Petersburg police said they received a call for a disturbance in the 500 block of Oak Hill Road near Meadowview Drive. When officers arrived on scene, they were overcome by fumes from an unknown substance after making contact with a male resident inside the home.

Three officers were later taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, as well as the resident. Their conditions and details on what the hazardous materials were are unknown at this time.

Petersburg police said evidence collected at the home will be sent to the State Lab of Examination.

The resident, now identified as 37-year-old James Mason, has been arrested and charged with three counts of malicious wounding, possession of meth, possession of cocaine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

At this time, there is no longer a threat to the public.
