Van used by group providing health services to homeless population stolen

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A local medical outreach group’s van was stolen after the group dropped it off for repairs over the weekend.

Daily Planet Health Services dropped its van off for repairs on Saturday — and said they never got it back.

“We actually traced it back and discovered that it had made its way to Fredericksburg,” said Sarah Tunner, Director of Development for Daily Planet Health Services. “We’ve kind of lost it between that point and now.”

Tunner said the group found out on Tuesday that it had been stolen from the auto repair business.

Daily Planet offers health and supportive services to people experiencing homelessness and housing instability in the Richmond area.

The van was one way for the group to get out in the community and bring help directly to those individuals by providing care, blankets and other supplies from the vehicle. As a result of the theft, Tunner said their daily mission has become more challenging.

“It limits us, you know, it means we need to figure out other vehicles, we need to figure out people using personal vehicles and trying to fill in that gap,” Tunner said.

Tunner said the van was donated to them only two and a half years ago. She said if they can’t find it, they hope they’ll be able to get another one.

“Whoever took the van, please return it,” said Tunner. “You know, you’re impacting some of the most vulnerable folks in our community who we are trying so desperately to help and that van does that for us.”

Anyone with any information about the van’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Richmond Police Department at 804-646-5112.
