POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A large fire burned through a barn in Powhatan with at least six horses inside.
Shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 21, Powhatan fire crews responded to Oakleigh Arabian Farm, located on 1507 Dorset Road, for a report of a fire. When they arrived on scene, they saw three quarters of a barn engulfed in flames.
According to officials, five horses were able to be rescued from the barn and relocated to a neighbor’s field before crews arrived. Crews were then able to rescue one other horse once they arrived on scene, however they believe three horses to have died in the fire.
By 8:45 p.m., the barn was marked under control. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Dorset Road was closed due to the fire, but has since been reopened.
