CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — As temperatures drop throughout the winter season, increases in energy bill rates are often expected, however, Dominion Energy says there are ways to save.
The electric company suggests keeping one’s thermostat at 68 degrees, or even lower, as each degree shifted higher or lower can significantly increase energy bills. If possible, installing a smart or programmable thermostat will automatically raise or lower temperature settings when someone is asleep or away from their home.
Sixty-eight degrees may seem low which is why officials advise some compromising including the use of blankets and opening and closing curtains depending on the time of day. Opening curtains during the day will allow for natural sunlight to provide heat to the home while closing them will reduce chill from cold windows.
Due to the significant amount of energy space heaters use to operate, residents are asked to limit their use to make for lower utility rates as well. Regular maintenance of HVAC systems is also key for saving and efficiency.
Dominion suggests residents clean air filters as dirty ones can affect the airflow of the HVAC system causing it to potentially slow down which will make the system work harder bringing in higher energy rates.
Dominion also provides energy assistance for a variety of needs such as setting up payment plans, assisting those who are of lower income, supporting those with serious medical conditions and more.
