Yesterday, we launched The Texas Tribune Bookshop on Bookshop.org, which connects readers with independent bookstores around the world and has raised $29 million to sustain independent booksellers.
This page features books by the authors, novelists and journalists who’ve spoken at the Texas Tribune Festival and our free public events, as well as recommendations from members of our staff. Every purchase you make on the site will benefit a local independent bookstore, as well as the Tribune, which depends on members like you.
We asked our colleagues across the Tribune what books they love, and they think other Texans will love, too. Recommendations include nonfiction and fiction books focused on Texas and Texas issues, such as Meghan P. Browne’s “Indelible Ann,” Elizabeth Crook’s “The Which Way Tree” and Oscar Cásares’ “Brownsville: Stories,” and also some with a national focus that resonate with Texans, such as Matthew Desmond’s “Poverty, by America” and Timothy Egan’s “The Worst Hard Time.”
On the page, you’ll also find books authored by this year’s TribFest speakers, including the top 10 bestsellers from the TribFest bookstore, and all books from speakers at the past four years’ TribFests.
The Texas Tribune also hosts conversations with Texas authors and authors of books centered on ideas and themes that matter to Texans. You can read more from authors recently interviewed by the Tribune, including former Prairie View A&M president Ruth J. Simmons, author of a memoir, “Up Home: One Girl’s Journey,” and former Tribune reporter Roxanna Asgarian, author of a book on child welfare, “We Were Once a Family.”
As with our journalism, we hope our curated Bookshop creates opportunities for a deeper understanding of issues and informs conversations within Texas communities and across the state. Please send us suggestions for the best Texas books YOU would recommend!
