An 18-year-old Ellendale woman died and several others were injured in a car crash Sunday morning in Georgetown.
Around 11:40 a.m., a 39-year-old Ellendale woman was driving a Mazda 3 south on Dupont Boulevard (Route 113), south of West Robbins Road, according to Delaware State Police. At the same time, a 58-year-old Bangor, Pennsylvania, man, was driving a Nissan Murano north on Dupont Boulevard.
“For unknown reasons, the Mazda swerved sharply to its left and drove through the center grass median and into the northbound lanes, where it collided with the oncoming Nissan,” police said in a news release.
The 18-year-old was the front-seat passenger in the Mazda. She was pronounced dead at a hospital. Her name will be released after her family is notified.
A 4-year-old boy in the back seat of the Mazda was taken to a hospital and later flown to a different hospital “for continued treatment,” police said. The driver of the Mazda was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
The driver of the Nissan and his front-seat passenger were both taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
The northbound lanes of Dupont Highway were closed for four hours and the southbound lanes for two while the scene was investigated and cleaned up.
