Caravel earns No. 1 seed

A team that has knocked on the door repeatedly in the DIAA Girls Basketball Tournament will start the 2022 version as the top seed.

Caravel, which has reached the final five times in the last nine years without a championship, earned that No. 1 distinction Friday when the seedings for this year’s tournament were determined.

The Buccaneers (14-6) are among eight teams earning first-round byes in the 24-team field. The others are No. 2 Sanford, No. 3 Charter of Wilmington, No. 4 St. Elizabeth, No. 5 Tatnall, No. 6 Ursuline, No. 7 Delmarva Christian and No. 8 Lake Forest.

Caravel's Laila Glover (15) and India Johnston fight for the ball with Woodbridge's Kamryn Spence in the Bucs' 71-38 win on Feb. 1. Caravel will be the No. 1 seed in the DIAA Girls Basketball Tournament next week.

The tournament will get under way Wednesday with eight first-round games, on the home courts of the higher-seeded teams. The winners will advance to the second round on Friday, on the home courts of the eight highest seeds. All first- and second-round games will start at 7 p.m.
