Beach entertainment venues are having a banner summer judging by ticket sales. Some of the offerings in the coming days will include rock and country acts, as well as comedians.
In Dewey Beach, the Bottle & Cork continues to pack them in with concerts galore. I was there for the first time this summer this past Sunday for the Tommy Conwell & the Young Rumblers show, and I was struck by how many local musicians were in the audience to check out the bluesy band from Philly.
Next up at the Cork is the return of ’80s tribute act The Legwarmers at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 28 ($20). On Sunday, July 30, there will be a sold-out appearance by indie-rock act Dashboard Confessional with opening act Wheatus. (Dashboard Confessional was also scheduled to play a sold-out double bill with Counting Crows at the Freeman Arts Pavilion in Selbyville on Tuesday, July 25).
Fans of country music will have an opportunity to check out singer-songwriter Chase Matthew at the Cork at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1 ($25).
Any question of local-gone-national country star Jimmie Allen’s hometown support in light of highly publicized legal challenges was answered last Friday when tickets went on sale for his Cork return this fall. Nightclub owner Alex Pires told me tickets for the Friday, Sept. 29, show went on sale at 10 a.m. and sold out in two minutes at $40 a pop.
A second show was immediately added for Thursday, Sept. 28, and that quickly sold out as well. That’s a total of 2,400 tickets for the two nights, Pires said — all the more impressive as Sept. 29 also happens to be the launch of the massive Oceans Calling music festival in Ocean City.
The Freeman Arts Pavilion in Selbyville is also rocking and rolling this summer with its packed schedule of outdoor shows. Tribute act Brass Transit will pay homage to the music of the band Chicago at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 27 ($27).
Fans of the late, great Aretha Franklin will enjoy Classic Albums Live: Aretha’s Gold at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 29 ($25). The Mavericks will bring their mix of country, rock and Latin music to Freeman on Sunday, July 30, following a 7 p.m. opening set by Seth Walker ($39).
In Berlin, The Globe Gastro Theatre will host its Comedy Is A Drag laugh fest at 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 29 ($15 in advance, $20 at the door). Host Kate Nicholls will present sets by Dark Mark, Ebony A’La Mode and Daniel Macfarland.
The Globe has also placed tickets on sale for a fall concert event. Singer-rapper Afroman is sure to play his trademark hit single “Because I Got High” at the show scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11 ($45).
In Lewes, the Rocking the Docks concert series continues each Wednesday through Aug. 23. The shows are held outside at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal. One of the series’ biggest-drawing shows of the season will take place Aug. 2 when the Amish Outlaws bringing their high-energy act to the stage at 7 p.m. ($30).
The Room at Cedar Grove, which is located west of Lewes, is continuing its series of dinner concerts. At 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 28, Rob Fahey & the Pieces will be the featured entertainment ($85). Fahey is the former guitarist of The Ravyns, which contributed the hit song “Raised On Radio” to the soundtrack of the classic ’80’s movie “Fast Times At Ridgemont High.”
Local jazz vocalist Holly Lane will bring her popular French-style cabaret act to the Room at Cedar Grove at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 29 ($75). The Dale Melton Trio will mix New Orleans-style funk with elements of blues, jazz, rock and bossa nova at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 30 ($25).
