Whether you’re a film buff or have tuned into the movie world on social media in recent months, you know this Friday, July 21, is gearing up to be the one of the biggest box office events we’ve seen in recent years.
“Barbie,” directed by Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird,” “Frances Ha,” and “Little Women”), hits theaters Friday and stars Margot Robbie as “Barbie” and Ryan Gosling as” Ken” as they leave Barbie Land for the real world.
On the same day, a film by Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Knight,” “Interstellar,” and “Inception”), “Oppenheimer,” starring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, takes us back into history to WWII and The Manhattan Project, the creation of the atomic bomb
“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” will take audiences into two very different worlds for the duration of their nearly two-hour and three-hour films respectively, and the latest social media battle has been figuring out which movie people will buy their tickets to first.
By analyzing Google search volume for both films, Digital Third Coast released a study detailing which likely big-screen hit First State audiences will tune into on Friday.
According to the data, Delaware will be showing out for the premiere of “Oppenheimer” more than “Barbie.”
Despite Delaware ditching Gerwig’s dreamy world of pink and stylish stilettos for the death and destruction of “Oppenheimer,” only 23 states felt similarly. Twenty seven states are opting to see “Barbie” first, at least according to their data.
Delaware’s support for Nolan’s latest movie leans into the regional trend of Northeastern audiences opting to see “Oppenheimer.” The South and the West Coast will be put on their best pink outfits for “Barbie” while the Midwest is split between the two.
For some, there will undoubtedly be a double “Barbenheimer” feature with both debuts!
Before you cozy up with that bucket of popcorn, your favorite theater candy and a fountain drink, let us know which film you’ll be seeing first on opening weekend by voting in our poll.
