Brett Callahan played in the 2013 Little League World Series with Newark National.
His next chance to be on a World Series team may come with the Detroit Tigers.
The Tigers chose Callahan, a former Newark Charter School All-State pick and Saint Joseph’s University slugger, in the 13th round of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday.
Also selected Tuesday was Delaware State University third baseman Trey Paige, a Reading, Pennsylvania, resident. The 2022 MEAC Player of the Year went to the St. Louis Cardinals in the 17th round.
As a junior in 2023, Callahan was an All-Atlantic 10 first-team outfielder after batting .344 and smacked a team-best 11 home runs as Saint Joseph’s won its first A-10 regular-season title.
Callahan tied the Hawks’ single-season record for runs scored (61) and led the Atlantic 10 with six triples. He drove in 55 runs and also stole 14 bases.
“We’re super excited for Brett,” Saint Joseph’s coach Fritz Hamburg said in a school press release. “He has had a tremendous career as a Hawk and we are all just so proud and happy for Brett and this next opportunity.”
Grad student Paige batted .372, third best in the league, in 2023 as DSU moved to the Northeast Conference for baseball. He was also second in the NEC in home runs (14) and total bases (132), third in slugging (.691 and fourth in on-base percentage (.468).
Paige is No. 3 on the DSU career home run chart with 32. He is the second-highest pick out of DSU behind Eric Carter, a Seattle Mariners 10th-round choice in 2004.
“Hornets coach J.P. Blandin said in a school statement that Paige “has put in the work and now he gets the opportunity he deserves. I am very grateful that the Cardinals drafted him as we have some former assistant coaches in that organization and, all told, it will be a perfect fit for him.’’
