The best teams are the best teams because they have the best players.
Tatnall and Cape Henlopen certainly proved to be the best teams in Delaware high school girls lacrosse this spring.
The Hornets finished 17-1, their only loss coming to Episcopal Academy (Pa.). Tatnall dominated Archmere 21-5 in the semfinals of the DIAA Girls Lacrosse Tournament, then ended two of the most amazing streaks in Delaware high school sports with a 10-9 win over Cape in the championship game.
That stunning outcome on May 25 at Delaware State’s Alumni Stadium snapped the Vikings’ runs of 13 consecutive state titles and 176 straight in-state victories.
But Cape Henlopen (16-2) still had an outstanding season. The Vikings’ only other loss came to Severna Park (Md.), and Cape overwhelmed Sussex Academy 20-4 in the DIAA semifinals.
So when the state’s coaches voted on All-State teams, it was no surprise to see most of the top spots occupied by Hornets and Vikings. Tatnall and Cape combined to place 10 players on the first team.
Our final rankings of the Top 45 players in Delaware high school girls lacrosse look very similar. We use the coaches’ voting, along with more specific input from a prominent coach, and 11 of our first 16 spots are taken by Hornets and Vikings.
They certainly earned it. But there were many other talented players around the state who also deserve recognition, and we have done our best to identify them. Congratulations to all on a great season, especially the history-making squad from Tatnall.
