How many people will turn out to watch a high school baseball game in Delaware?
We got a record answer on June 3, as 3,160 fans came to Frawley Stadium to watch Delaware Military Academy down neighborhood rival Conrad 7-1 for its second DIAA Baseball Tournament title in three years.
It was a good indication of the strengthening interest in high school baseball, and a great finish to a very competitive tournament.
DMA finished 20-2, with its only losses coming to Tower Hill (6-4) and Caravel (1-0). The Seahawks were at their best in the postseason, winning their four tournament games by a combined score of 36-6.
But there were plenty of other teams in the mix, as the top talent was distributed pretty evenly across the state.
That made for some tough choices in our final player rankings, based on the coaches’ All-State voting and personal observations throughout the spring, including some big playoff performances.
We came up with 52 players worthy of recognition, with many more under consideration. It’s proof that baseball is one of the most competitive sports in Delaware high school athletics.
