The Philadelphia 76ers announced Tuesday they have fired head coach Glenn “Doc” Rivers after three season.
“Doc is one of the most successful coaches in NBA history, a future Hall of Famer, and someone I respect immensely,” 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey said in a new release. “We’re grateful for all he did in his three seasons here and thank him for the important impact he made on our franchise. After having the chance to reflect upon our season, we decided that certain changes are necessary to further our goals of competing for a championship.”
The 76ers with NBA MVP Joel Embiid were considered a contender for the NBA title this season. After finishing the regular season 56-28 and earning the third-seed in the Eastern Conference for the playoffs, the Sixers eliminated the Atlanta Hawks in the first round. They were up 3-2 against Boston in the second round, but the Celtics used a fourth-quarter rally to win Game 6 and force Game 7.
In Game 7, Jayson Tatum scored 51 points and the Celtics dominated the third quarter en route to a 112-88 victory. It was the third-straight year the Sixers were eliminated in the second round and dropped Rivers’ record as a head coach in Game 7s to 6-10.
Rivers was hired in 2020 as the 76ers head coach and was 154-82 over three season.
Before coming to Philadelphia, Rivers was a head coach for the Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics, and Los Angeles Clippers. Overall, Rivers is 1,097-763 (.590) over 24 seasons as a head coach. He won an NBA title with the Celtics in 2008 and made the NBA finals with the Celtics in 2010. He was named NBA Coach of the Year in 2000.
