Bing’s Bakery, an iconic business whose Newark roots go back more than 150 years, announced via social media it has opened its second coffee shop in the city.
Bing’s Bake & Brew has taken over the spot at 64 E. Main St. that had formerly been occupied by The Little French Cafe of Newark.
Cafe owner Martha Barrier, a former high school French teacher, said on her website the last day for the two-year-old business that specialized in casual French cuisine was April 22.
Bing’s Bakery is returning to its origins. Well, kind of. The business, originally called Fader’s Bakery, was founded in 1871 by Gotleib Fader who delivered baked goods in a horse-drawn wagon and sold them from his home’s storefront at around 57 E. Main St.
Russell and Selena Bing purchased the bakery from the Faders in 1946 and changed the name to Bing’s Bakery. The couple moved the bakery to its current 253 E. Main St. location in 1955. Head baker Tom Guzzi and his wife Carla bought the business from Selena Bing in 2005 and kept the name.

A post on Bing’s Facebook page said owners can see the site of the old Fader’s Bakery from a window of The Little French Cafe, which is next door to the National 5 & 10.
“We are so happy to have a location right where it all started in 1871 for the bakery,” read the post.
This is the third business for Bing’s in Newark. Since December 2019, the Guzzi family has operated the flagship Bing’s Bake & Brew at South Main Street and Amstel Avenue.
The coffee shop sells pastries such as raisin squares, muffins, iced buns, large cookies, and other baked goods that are made at the bakery, located less than a mile away.
The Little French Café of Newark opened in the summer of 2021. It had taken over the former site of Brewed Awakenings. The cafe was known for its crêpes, croissants, and ham and Gruyère sandwiches.
On April 2, Barrier, in a social media post, said she had decided to step away from running The Little French Cafe.

“As you can imagine, it has been a struggle to do well after the passing of my husband in October,” she wrote. “The memories that have been created here will forever be a treasure to me.”
Bing’s said as of Monday, it will continue to make many of the same menu items The Little French Cafe offered, and it also has added a dessert menu featuring Bing’s pastries.
A grand opening will be held this summer.
