Blaze that caused heavy damage to Smyrna home ruled arson

A fire that started on a vacant house in Smyrna, causing around $200,000 in damage, was determined by the Delaware state fire marshal to be arson Saturday morning.

The Citizens’ Hose Company responded to the fire just before midnight Thursday on the 100 block of Smyrna Landing Road. No injuries were reported, and the house was empty when responders arrived on the scene.

After an on-scene investigation, deputy fire marshals determined that the home was under construction and that the fire was intentionally started. A criminal investigation is underway.

Thursday night’s fire comes a week after another arson case in Smyrna on East Mount Vernon Street, but there is no indication that the two cases are related as of yet.
