The Cape May-Lewes Ferry is one of the small, but much-loved wonders within the Small Wonder, with a fanbase that has reached more than just regional residents.
And Hulu’s latest series is here to prove it.
“Tiny Beautiful Things” premiered April 7 on Hulu with an eight-episode drop and features a subtle Delaware Easter egg that might be lost on viewers unfamiliar with the First State.
The show is based on the Dear Sugar advice column that appeared in Rumpus and was penned by Cheryl Strayed, author of “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail,” which was adapted into a movie in 2014 led by former Delaware resident Reese Witherspoon.
Letters sent into the advice column were later compiled into a book by Strayed called “Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar,” which serves as the source material for the show, though the series is not a biography of Strayed.
Kathryn Hahn – of “Bad Moms,” “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” and “Step Brothers,” to name a few – plays the main character Clare Pierce, a loose version of Strayed had she not become a writer or hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, said show writer and producer Liz Tigelaar in an L.A. Times interview last week.
In episode two of the series, protagonist Pierce can be seen wearing belted jeans with a chambray shirt unbuttoned atop none other than a Cape May-Lewes Ferry shirt.
The show was filmed on set in Los Angeles, California under Reese Witherspoon’s media company, Hello Sunshine, and does not have filming ties to any local spots.
But if Hahn can make a Cape May-Lewes Ferry shirt look chic, you know the Delaware and New Jersey attraction is worth all the hype.

While a trip to Delaware doesn’t seem to be in the cards for Pierce, giving the series a watch might be worth it to see if there are any other regional surprises in store.
The entire first season is streaming on Hulu.
