University of Delaware police have evacuated six buildings and told students and staff to avoid the South Green after a “safety related incident” involving an unidentified chemical compound in the Lammot DuPont Laboratory shortly before 1 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
A university spokesperson called the incident “an isolated hazardous materials situation” related to an experiment in the lab, which is closed until further notice.
Memorial Hall, Allison Hall, Hugh Morris Library, Brown Lab and Drake Lab have also been evacuated and closed, according to police.
While UD said they are not aware of any injuries, several paramedics are at the scene and New Castle County Emergency Medical services mobile medical aid unit pulled up near the Colburn Lab, which remains open.
Local and state responders have been posted outside several science buildings along The Green and Academy Street. Other than the presence of first responders, the Newark campus seemed calm Wednesday afternoon as students freely walked by the buildings.
