House speaker vote fails for 14th time: live updates

WASHINGTON – A battered Kevin McCarthy again came up just short of becoming speaker of the House during a contentious 14th ballot Friday, prolonging the Republicans’ angry battle over leadership and keeping the new Congress frozen in place.

Reps. Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert, vociferous opponents of McCarthy throughout this raucous week, cast “present” votes on the latest ballot, but four others voted against McCarthy and denied him the majority he needed to prevail.

“A speaker has not been elected,” the House clerk intoned for a 14th time.

Republicans them moved to adjourn until Monday, prolonging the bitter battle that has exposed the Republicans to ridicule and prevented the new Congress from moving forward. It has been four grueling days of negotiations and the most speaker votes in 100 years.
