A 43-year-old Townsend man was killed Friday when his SUV drove off a highway in Smyrna and struck a group of trees.
Delaware State Police identified the driver on Sunday as Charles Cassidy Jr.
Cassidy was driving north on Route 13 (Dupont Parkway) at 8:53 a.m. when his 2015 Dodge Journey veered off the right side of the highway just south of Smyrna Landing Road, police said.
The vehicle struck a group of trees and spun around before coming to a stop. Cassidy, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. It is unknown what caused the vehicle to leave the road.
Route 13 was closed for approximately three hours while the accident was being investigated and cleared.
Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit will continue to investigate. Witnesses are being asked to contact Senior Cpl. M. Calio by calling 302-365-8483.
