A 45-year-old tractor-trailer driver was killed in a Thursday morning crash that closed Route 1 near Dover for about five hours, Delaware State Police said.
The man, whom police identified only as a Delaware resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash occurred a little after 8 a.m. as the man drove a Freightliner tractor south on Route 1.
After passing the exit to Scarborough Road, police said the tractor traveled off the west edge of the roadway and into an embankment before striking several trees.
The man was not properly restrained, said Senior Cpl. Jason Hatchell, a police spokesperson.
Motorists were urged to seek alternate routes of travel as the crash was investigated and cleared.
Route 1 was closed from the Scarborough Road exit to the Dover toll plaza. The Route 13 ramp to Route 1 was also closed at Scarborough Road.
The incident remains under investigation and police ask that witnesses contact Master Cpl. Joseph Lane at (302) 698-8457.
