The incumbent Democrat sheriff in Kent County was upset Tuesday by a Republican challenger in a three-way race, according to unofficial results.
Republican Norman Barlow received about 53% of the vote for sheriff with 28,593 votes. Democrat Brian Lewis received 23,995 votes and non-Partisan candidate Aarika Nelson received 1,062 votes for the four-year term.
Also, four commissioners’ races for Kent County Levy Court were up for election Tuesday along with the recorder of deeds.
Here are the results:
At-large commissioner
Incumbent Democrat Terry Pepper won 27,403 to 26,217 over Republican Jason Bonner for a fifth four-year term. Pepper is the president of Levy Court.
District 2
Incumbent Democrat Jeffrey Hall was reelected for a second four-year term, 4,656 to 3,538 over Republican Anthony Egipciaco Jr.
District 4
District 4 didn’t have an incumbent because Republican Commissioner Eric Buckson ran for state Senate instead. Republican Robert Scott won the open seat, 6,287 to 3,567 over Democrat Dennis Norwood for the four-year term.
District 6
The District 6 seat was also open after Republican Glen Howell decided not to run for reelection. Republican Paul Hertz won the uncontested race for a four-year term with 7,897 votes.
Recorder of deeds
In the recorder of deeds race, Republican Eugenia Thornton defeated Democrat D.J. Cox for the open seat, 28,131 to 25,250. Incumbent Democrat Betty Lou McKenna decided not to run again for the four-year term.
