A Wicomico County Sheriff’s deputy is facing rape and a number of other charges after the department received a complaint Sunday evening.
Deputy Steven Abreu, 30, was taken into custody and charged with second-degree rape, sexual offense – fourth degree, second-degree assault, false imprisonment, sexual contact while a person is in law enforcement custody and three counts of misconduct in office, according to a Monday Sheriff’s Office press release.
The matter was assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division. Subsequent to interviews with witnesses and consultation with the Office of the State’s Attorney for Wicomico County, Abreu was taken into custody and charged.
Abreu, who was terminated immediately after the complaint was received and substantiated, has been employed with the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office less than one year.
In a social media post from June 16, the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office congratulated its most recent graduates from the Eastern Shore Criminal Justice Academy including Abreu, saying “Welcome to the WCSO Family!”

The District Court Commissioner held Abreu without bond. Abreu is expected to have a bond hearing before a District Court judge Monday.
The investigation remains open and ongoing. Sheriff Mike Lewis will provide information as the investigation develops.
