A grill in a backyard started a fire at an Oklahoma City home.On Saturday, firefighters arrived at a house near Southwest 89th Street and South Santa Fe Avenue to put out the blaze, but not before it spread from the backyard into the house itself.Frilling burgers in the backyard turned into a house fire with one quick boom. “The homeowner said she had lit the grill. Ten minutes later, to cook some burgers, went inside, getting that taken care of. Heard a loud boom and smoke alarms were going off,” said Battalion Chief Russell Huffman, OKCFD.The homeowner called the fire department. When they arrived, they saw a large blaze on the back porch.”It did extend up into the attic space, and got into the attic above the house,” Huffman said.As it spread, the fire department said their best option was to take out part of the roof. “We ended up vertically ventilating, which is cutting a hole in the roof, and got the fire knocked out and got it contained to a little bit of damage,” Huffman said.They said there was some damage.”The house is salvageable. Yeah, it’s probably about 25 percent of the house is damaged,” Huffman said.There were no injuries to the homeowner or firefighters.”The smoke alarms alerted her to something going on. She heard the noise, and she was able to get her pets and her out. Firefighters are all okay. It is hot and humid, a little humid today. So, we’ve taken some time to make sure they stay hydrated, but everybody’s in good shape…no injuries,” Huffman said.
