A 72-year-old man from Millsboro was killed in a crash involving a tractor-trailer on Friday night near Laurel, according to Delaware State Police.
The man was driving east on Route 24 near Hitch Pond Road at around 11:14 p.m. while a 60-year-old man from Bridgeville was driving a tractor-trailer down Route 24 in the opposite direction, state police said.
The trucker then veered into the eastbound lane for “unknown reasons,” police said. His tractor-trailer struck the 72-year-old man’s compact car head-on, police reported, sending the vehicle spinning off onto the eastbound shoulder of Route 24.
The 72-year-old was not wearing a seat belt, according to police, and was pronounced dead on the scene. The 60-year-old man was uninjured, police said. Route 24 was closed between Hitch Pond Road and Shiloh Church Road for over four hours, police said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective J.J. Smith at 302-703-3267 or contact Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333.
