5-year-old and 9-year-old sisters identified as passengers killed in Chesterfield County crash

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Police have identified the two people that were killed in a crash on Old Wrexham Road in Chesterfield County early Friday morning.

According to the Chesterfield County Police Department, around 1:54 a.m. on March 1, the driver of a 2009 Mercury Mariner was heading north on Old Wrexham Road near Old Wrexham Place when the car left the roadway and hit a tree.

Two passengers, identified as 5-year-old Ava Turner and 9-year-old Ivey Birch, of the 6000 block of Apamatica Lane, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The passengers were sisters.

The driver, a man, was taken to an area hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

At this point, police said the investigation indicates that both speed and the “lack of ensuring proper use of safety restraint” contributed to the severity of the crash.

The driver is known to the victims but is not related to them, according to police.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to contact Chesterfield Police at 804-748-1251.
