BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Firefighters said they responded to a house fire on Lobelia Avenue Wednesday morning.
The fire happened around 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, March 2.
Authorities say three people who were inside of the home were able to escape the blaze before crews arrived at the scene.
Firefighters rescued two dogs and a hedgehog from inside the home but were not able to rescue a pet snake that was still inside. It was later found deceased.
Investigators say the fire was caused by a mechanical malfunction in a car parked under the carport. The flames had engulfed the car and spread to the roof of the house when crews arrived at the scene.
It took firefighters about 30 minutes to get the fire under control.
Officials say one of the residents was burned on the arms after reentering the home while attempting to save the pets.
The Red Cross was called to assist the residents of the home, authorities say.
