2 Delaware teens killed after driving into Cedar Creek in Milford

Two 17-year-old boys died in a car crash early Thursday morning in Milford, according to Delaware State Police.

The driver, a 17-year-old from Dover, was heading north in the southbound lanes of Coastal Highway near Brick Granary Road around 12:39 a.m., state police said. He failed to follow the curve of the road and entered the grass median between the north and south lanes of the highway, according to police.

State police said the boy continued to drive north through the grass between the guard rails, approaching the double-span bridge over Cedar Creek. The car hit a grass berm and “vaulted” into the creek, police said. It landed upside down and was almost completely underwater, according to police.

By the time Sussex County dive teams and Coastal Towing were able to pull the car out of the water, the driver and his 17-year-old passenger from Camden had died, police said. The victims’ names have not yet been released.

The crash closed Coastal Highway for about four hours, state police said.
