An 18-year-old man from Milford and a 36-year-old woman from Magnolia were killed in a head-on collision Sunday night in Felton, Delaware State Police reported.
State police said 36-year-old Cheryl Hagens-Brandl was driving east on Irish Hill Road near Blaine Road at around 6:02 p.m. on Sunday. At the same time, 18-year-old Christopher A. Tunis was heading west, according to police.
Tunis was behind a large pick-up truck, police said, and he moved to the eastbound lane in order to pass it. The lane switch was legal, police reported, but it put him directly in Hagens-Brandl’s path.
Both Tunis and Hagens-Brandl swerved off of Irish Hill Road to avoid crashing into each other, state police said. The cars still ended up colliding head-on before coming to a stop in a roadside field, according to police.
Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt, police reported. Hagens-Brandl was pronounced dead on the scene, police said, and Tunis was taken to the hospital where he later died.
Police said the passenger in Tunis’ car and the two passengers in Hagens-Brandl’s car were taken to the hospital with “serious injuries.”
