AKRON, Ohio — A teen was arrested for his alleged role in an attempted carjacking of a 27-year-old woman who was punched and shot at on Saturday afternoon, according to the Akron Police Department.
Officers responded around 4:20 p.m. to a report of shots fired an apartment complex on Tarson Terrace in East Akron.
A 27-year-old woman, Nicholette Hilton, told officers she was unloading her groceries when an unknown male later identified as a 13-year-old boy, and several others tried taking her car.
During the encounter, one of the teens punched her in the face and tried driving away with her car, police said. Hilton said the teen who hit her appeared to be around 19-years-old.
“I want justice. I want charges pressed and I want them in jail, and prison time is okay with me. I don’t care how young they are,” Hilton said.
One of the teens jumped out of her car while it was moving and the vehicle rolled across the parking lot and into a nearby apartment building, police said.
Multiple shots were fired, some of which struck the woman’s car. Police found her bullet-riddled car in the parking lot. Shell casings were also found and processed.
“You shot at me. You could have took my life away from my children. Me and my husband are all they have,” Hilton told News 5. “I was scared for my life. I can’t even go home now because I’m scared everywhere I’m gonna turn, they’re going to shoot up my house.”
A 13-year-old boy was located in the parking lot near the victim’s car. He was taken into custody at the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center. Police charged him with aggravated robbery and theft.
Investigators are working to determine and identify the others involved in the attempted carjacking.
Lt. Michael Miller said detectives are looking into the possibility that the group is connected to a March carjacking on Wren Walk in which a DoorDash delivery driver, who had just gotten of the job, was forced to drive to an ATM at gunpoint and withdraw money. The victim was then ordered out of the car and walked about a mile back to his home.
Miller said the possibility of teens committing such brazen crimes with guns is very disturbing.
“These kids are putting themselves in terrible situations, making terrible decisions that will impact the rest of their life,” Miller said.
