NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia State Police are investigating a plane crash that resulted in at least one death at an airport in Newport News.
Shortly after 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6, state troopers were called to Williamsburg International Airport for a reported small Cessna airplane crash.
A preliminary investigation revealed that, shortly before 3 p.m., a single-engine Cessna 172 was trying to take off from Williamsburg International Airport.
The plane reached an altitude of approximately 100 feet, veered off course and crashed into an embankment adjacent to the runway, according to police.
Virginia State Police have now confirmed that there were three occupants in the plane. The female pilot died in the crash, the co-pilot — an 18-year-old male — and the rear seat passenger — an 18-year-old male — were both transported to Regional Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The cause of the crash is still unknown. Virginia State Police are continuing to investigate the incident and are working to notify the next of kin.
